Conor McGregor made a surprise visit to Cavan and Monaghan yesterday as he stepped up efforts to rally support for his presidential campaign.
The former MMA fighter, who has announced his intention to run for the country’s top office, visited Monaghan town where he met with local business owners and spoke with Fine Gael TD for Cavan–Monaghan, David Maxwell. Deputy Maxwell confirmed that he is pledging his full support to party candidate Heather Humphreys.
According to Ronan Gargan, journalist at Shannonside Northern Sound, McGregor also stopped in Cavan town and Ballyjamesduff last night as part of his whirlwind tour of the region.
While in Monaghan, the Dubliner said he wanted to see a democratic process play out and called on council representatives to back his nomination.
When asked why he wanted to become President, McGregor said his reasoning was to “return the power to the people,” in line with the founding proclamation of 1922. He added that he wanted to see more authority devolved to local councils so communities could “decide the outcome of their own future.”
Under election rules, candidates must be nominated by at least four local authorities in order to appear on the ballot for the October 24th election. With Leitrim, Roscommon and other councils due to meet later this month, McGregor is continuing his tour across the country in a bid to secure the required backing.
