Owners of historic buildings in Leitrim urged to apply for heritage funding

Owners and custodians of historic buildings and structures across Leitrim are being encouraged to apply for grants of up to €200,000 under the Historic Structures Fund (HSF) 2026, launched this week by Minister for Housing, Local Government and Heritage, James Browne TD, and Minister of State for Nature, Heritage and Biodiversity, Christopher O’Sullivan TD.

The scheme, administered through local authorities, supports the repair, maintenance, and conservation of protected structures and other historic buildings, helping to preserve Ireland’s built heritage for future generations.

In 2025, over €3.5 million was allocated to 28 heritage projects nationwide. The 2026 round will continue to prioritise projects with strong conservation objectives that demonstrate a clear community or public benefit.

Minister Browne said the fund plays a key role in keeping historic buildings at the heart of local life:

“Our historic buildings and structures are a great source of pride for local communities. They are part of the fabric of our heritage and it is important that they are preserved, remaining part of life in our villages, towns and cities. The Historic Structures Fund is a vital support to the people who maintain our historic structures and prevent them from falling into disrepair or dereliction.”

Minister O’Sullivan added that the fund recognises the skill and dedication of those who work to protect Ireland’s built heritage:

“Supporting communities and those who protect and conserve the built heritage of Ireland is of the utmost importance. I’ve seen first-hand the positive impact of the HSF on the character of a place and the communities that live there. I would encourage potential applicants to get in touch with the Architectural Conservation Officer or Heritage Officer within their Local Authority as soon as possible.”

The National Built Heritage Service administers the HSF, with applications managed by heritage officers within each Local Authority. Eligible works include essential conservation such as roof and window repairs, repointing, re-rendering, and other measures that prevent structural deterioration.

To qualify, the property must be included or eligible for inclusion in the Record of Protected Structures or be located within an Architectural Conservation Area (ACA).

Interested Leitrim applicants are advised to contact the Architectural Conservation Office at Leitrim County Council for guidance on eligibility and deadlines.
