Gardaí in the west made a series of detections in County Leitrim this week during road traffic checkpoints carried out as part of the national Christmas Road Safety campaign.
Members of the Sligo/Leitrim Roads Policing Unit installed several checkpoints across the county, resulting in three separate enforcement actions.
At one checkpoint, a vehicle was seized after gardaí discovered that the driver was an unaccompanied learner permit holder, contrary to road traffic regulations.
A second vehicle was also seized when it was found to have no valid insurance.
In a more serious incident, a third driver was arrested on suspicion of drug driving following roadside checks.
Confirming the incidents, a Garda spokesperson said the checkpoints formed part of increased enforcement in the lead-up to Christmas.
“Sligo/Leitrim Roads Policing Unit conducted a number of checkpoints in County Leitrim as part of the Garda Christmas Road Safety campaign,” the spokesperson said.
“At one checkpoint, a vehicle was seized due to the driver being an unaccompanied learner permit holder. A second vehicle was seized due to no insurance and a third driver was arrested for drug driving. Never ever drink or drug drive.”
Gardaí have reiterated their appeal to motorists to drive responsibly over the festive period, reminding road users that enforcement activity will continue throughout the Christmas season.
