A man in his 30s is currently being held in custody at a Donegal garda station following the death of another man in Ardara in the early hours of Monday morning.
Emergency services were alerted at approximately 3.50am to an alleged assault at a private residence near the town. A man in his 60s was pronounced dead at the scene.
The house remains sealed off as gardaí carry out a full technical and forensic examination. The Garda Technical Bureau is examining the scene and the Office of the State Pathologist has been notified.
It is understood gardaí believe the deceased may have suffered stab wounds after another man is alleged to have broken into the house and attacked him. A second person who was present in the house at the time was not injured.
A man in his 30s was later arrested at a separate location and is currently detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984, at a garda station in Co. Donegal.
A Senior Investigating Officer has been appointed to lead the investigation, with an incident room established at Ballyshannon Garda Station. A Family Liaison Officer has also been assigned to support the family of the deceased.
Cathaoirleach of the Glenties Municipal District, Cllr Michael McClafferty, described the death as a “tragic incident” that has shocked the entire community in Ardara.
Gardaí are appealing to anyone with information to contact Ballyshannon Garda Station or any garda station. Investigations are ongoing.
