Eddie McGowan crowned Leitrim Sports Star of the Year

Drumshanbo’s World Champion Wheelchair Pool Star takes top honour at 2025 awards

Eddie McGowan Crowned Leitrim Sports Star of the Year

Last Saturday night at the stunning Lough Rynn Castle Estate & Gardens, Drumshanbo’s own Eddie McGowan was named Overall Leitrim Sports Star of the Year — the highest accolade at the 2025 Leitrim Sports Star Awards. His win capped a remarkable year in sport and cemented his place as one of Ireland’s most inspirational athletes.

In September 2025, McGowan etched his name into sporting history by winning the World Eight-Ball Pool Championship for wheelchair players at the World Eightball Pool Championships held in Ennis, County Clare. Facing off against Limerick’s Kevin Flynn, McGowan claimed the world title with a strong 5–3 victory in the final — thrilling a home crowd and bringing global glory to Irish pool.

For McGowan, the world title was more than a trophy — it was the culmination of years of dedication, discipline, and sheer love for the game. The champion has been a constant presence in Irish and European wheelchair pool events for many years, amassing national and continental honours before finally taking the world crown he had long chased.

From Drumshanbo Pool Halls to the World Stage

Eddie McGowan’s journey reads like the kind of sports narrative that inspires champions. A figure deeply rooted in the Leitrim sporting community, he has spent years not only competing but also advocating for greater inclusion in sport. His success resonates far beyond the pool table — it’s a testament to perseverance, resilience, and the power of representation in athletics.

Locals and sporting colleagues alike celebrated his achievements with pride in recent weeks, acknowledging not only his world title but the unwavering commitment he has shown both on and off the table.

At the annual awards ceremony, McGowan’s World Championship success — arguably the standout achievement in Leitrim sport this past year — was recognised with the top honour. It was a fitting tribute to a competitor who has pushed boundaries and inspired a new generation of athletes in the county and across Ireland.

Also honoured were a host of other sporting figures, including Ann-Marie Cox (Hall of Fame inductee for her contributions to women’s Gaelic football), Shane Ward (Coach of the Year), and several team and individual award winners across a variety of Leitrim sports disciplines.

Eddie McGowan’s story isn’t just about sporting excellence — it’s about breaking barriers, lifting up communities, and showing that world-class success can come from the heart of rural Ireland. From Drumshanbo’s local pool halls to the world championship spotlight, McGowan’s journey is one that deserves to be celebrated far and wide.
