Luke Kelly Story brings iconic Irish voice to Ballinamore stage

Fans of Irish folk music are in for a deeply moving and unforgettable evening when Dubliner – The Luke Kelly Story comes to The Island Theatre, Ballinamore, on Saturday, March 14th, 2026, at 8pm.

The acclaimed production celebrates the life and legacy of the legendary Luke Kelly, whose untimely death in January 1984 marked a moment of national mourning. More than four decades later, Kelly remains one of Ireland’s most treasured musical voices, remembered for his powerful vocals, political conviction, and emotional depth.

Created and performed by renowned Dublin singer and multi-instrumentalist Chris Kavanagh, this 90-minute show blends live performance with immersive multi-vision visuals, guiding audiences through Luke Kelly’s life, music, and enduring influence.

Rather than offering a simple tribute concert, the production creates an intimate journey through Kelly’s most iconic songs and stories, capturing the atmosphere that made him such a compelling presence on stage. Audience members regularly describe feeling as though Luke himself is in the room — a testament to the authenticity and respect with which the show is presented.

The production has enjoyed remarkable success nationwide, selling out major venues including Cork Opera House, Grand Opera House, and Dublin’s Vicar Street. A performance at Vicar Street was even attended by Michael D Higgins and his wife Sabina Higgins.

Chris Kavanagh’s close connection to The Dubliners’ legacy further strengthens the show’s credibility. In 2011, he was invited by John Sheahan to perform with The Dubliners on their German tour and later appeared on their 50th Anniversary DVD. Members of Luke Kelly’s family continue to attend his Dublin performances, offering ongoing support for his work.

The show has received widespread critical acclaim, with praise from Today FM, RTÉ, and The Irish Times, alongside endorsements from the Kelly family themselves.

The Ballinamore performance takes place on Saturday, March 14th, 2026, with doors opening at 7pm. The Crannog Bar will be open on the night. Tickets cost €30 plus booking fees and are non-refundable.

For anyone who cherishes Irish music, history, and storytelling, Dubliner – The Luke Kelly Story promises a powerful and emotionally resonant night out.
