Fuel crisis deepens as Sinn Féin calls for 25c cut at pumps

'Wrong decision at the worst time' — Kenny slams fuel tax hikes

Fuel crisis deepens as Sinn Féin calls for 25c cut at pumps

Sinn Féin TD Martin Kenny has called on all Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael representatives to support new Dáil legislation aimed at cutting the cost of petrol, diesel and home heating oil, warning that families across the region are “being pushed to the brink” by rising fuel prices.

The Sligo–Leitrim–South Donegal TD said he is hearing daily from people struggling to cope with the cost of living, particularly when it comes to heating their homes and commuting to work.

“Across Sligo, Leitrim and South Donegal, I am hearing every day from people who are struggling to keep up — struggling to heat their homes, struggling to fill the car to get to work and struggling to make ends meet,” Deputy Kenny said.

He warned that continued increases in fuel costs are placing significant strain on workers and families, while accusing the government of failing to act.

“People are being hammered by rising fuel costs, and yet this government continues to sit on its hands,” he said.

Sinn Féin has brought forward proposals which would see petrol and diesel prices reduced by 25 cent per litre, alongside a €183 reduction in the cost of home heating oil. The measures form part of the party’s Mineral Oil Tax (Emergency Cost of Living Reduction) Bill, which is due to be debated in the Dáil.

Deputy Kenny also criticised recent government decisions, claiming they have exacerbated the situation.

“Instead of stepping in to help, Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael have actually made things worse by pressing ahead with further tax increases on home heating oil. That is the wrong decision at the worst possible time,” he said.

He argued that immediate action could be taken to ease financial pressure on households, including scrapping planned tax increases and reducing excise duties on fuel.

“These are practical measures that would put money back in people’s pockets — but this government is choosing not to act,” he added.

Deputy Kenny said government TDs in the constituency now face a clear choice as the motion comes before the Dáil.

“They can stand with workers and families who are under real pressure, or they can continue to back a government that is refusing to act,” he said.

He urged all representatives to support the legislation and deliver “real relief” to households struggling with rising energy and fuel costs.
