A teenager found heavily intoxicated on the N4 near Boyle told Gardaí he believed he was in Clonmel, a court has heard.

Joshua Gillan (19), of 33 Dobsons Way, Bessbrook, Co Armagh, was charged with being intoxicated in a public place.

The incident occurred on October 4, 2025, at approximately 5.30pm, when Gardaí encountered Mr Gillan on the N4 at Greenvest, outside Boyle.

Giving evidence, Garda Nicholson told the court: “He thought he was in Clonmel — he was a danger to himself. I arrested him and took him to Carrick-on-Shannon.”

The court heard Mr Gillan was highly intoxicated and unable to properly account for himself while on the busy national road.

He was arrested under Section 4 of the Public Order Act and later charged at Carrick-on-Shannon Garda Station.

There were no previous convictions before the court.

Judge Éiteáin Cunningham imposed a fine of €100, giving Mr Gillan four months to pay.
