The South Leitrim Charity Cycle are holding a 50km fancy dress cycle this Saturday August 20, to coincide with the Mohill Festival which is currently taking place.
This year the chosen is Hugh’s House in Dublin as our beneficiary. This is a wonderful charity which provides family accommodation 365 days a year for families of sick children attending Temple Street or the Rotunda Hospitals.
It was set up in memory of Baby Hugh by his parents, Ade and Marty, who have selflessly dedicated their time and energy to help other parents who are struggling to keep everything together in the worst possible time they can be faced with.
When we hear of a child with long-term or terminal illness, we naturally think of the emotional stress and strain that a family will be going through. It might not also occur to us that the financial burden the family may be placed under can be extreme.
In many situations one parent has to stop working to be close to their child and the family income is reduced significantly. Now consider that family also need to pay for accommodation close to the hospital, meals, travel costs etc. All of this can add up to several hundred euros per week.
Thank to Hugh’s House, many parents have been able to avoid these extra stresses and focus on their family. The thing that stands out for this charity though, is that it is all ran on a voluntary basis.
Local ladies come in to help clean and cook meals from food that has been sponsored by local supermarkets. Handymen and tradesmen donate their time and expertise to tend to any plumbing/ electrical problems that may arise so the costs they have are typical household costs of electricity, gas etc.
The money that we raise is going towards the renovation of a second house nearby the hospitals so that Hugh’s House can help even more families. So this is where you can help.
There will be a registration fee of €40 and all of the money raised will go directly to Hugh’s House with an exception of a small donation to The Order Of Malta, who will accompany us on the day. There are no administration expenses or hidden costs taken by the South Leitrim Charity Cycle team.
If you would like to take part but don’t think you’re able to do 50km why not share the journey with a friend and take it in turns to cycle. If any of you do spinning classes, you will be well able to complete the 50k so no excuses
For the experienced cyclists out there, we may need a push going uphill thanks! So grab your friends and spread the word. We promise ye a great days craic and you will meet some really great people. We will take a couple of breaks on the route and will return to a BBQ and some refreshments, normally liquid ones, in Mohill.
As this is a charity associated with children we have decided that Fancy Dress is a must! So put your thinking hats on, grab your tutu or whatever hidden gems you have in the wardrobe and come and join us. We look forward to seeing you Saturday from 10am at St Patricks Church, Mohill.
