IT Sligo welcome over 1,000 first year students at Induction today

Chianti Otomo travelled 6,000 miles from Japan to attend a one day Induction at IT Sligo! Chianti will be studying MSc in Environmental Health Management online from Japan.

Over 1,000 students will gather at IT Sligo today, Monday the 10th of September, to start their first day at college.

The students will gather at the Institute's Knocknarea Arena to introduce them to third level education and to hear from guest speaker, Mayo footballer and former student of IT Sligo, Andy Moran.

For many students it will be their first time leaving home and the induction day includes advice in the transition from home to college life.  At Induction first years will be given tours of the campus, receive ID’s and network login details, timetables and an overall introduction to the services available at IT Sligo.

This year IT Sligo has introduced a new mandatory learning assessment called “QucikScan.”  This simple 15 minute assessment determines the students best learning methods and can advise students of better learning techniques and offer extra support if necessary.

For some students, first year can be overwhelming.  Through the student services IT Sligo offer support to students at many levels including counselling.  Dr. Siobhan McNally will be giving a talk on how to cope with student life and the support services available to students at the event.

There is also a parents/guardians talk to help them with an array of topics from fees and grants to advice on supporting their children through third level.

President of IT Sligo, Dr. Brendan McCormack welcomed all the first years to IT Sligo:

“It is a pleasure for me to welcome you all to the Institute of Technology Sligo and congratulations for making it here.  Never underestimate the journey you have taken to reach this landmark on your life’s journey.  The decision you have made, to further your education is one you will never regret.”

This year over 350 overseas students will be attending IT Sligo, from countries including, Oman, Brazil and Japan through Erasmus programme.
