New Leitrim Heritage Forum to produce a plan

New Leitrim Heritage Forum to produce a plan

Creevelea Abbey, Leitrim

The new Leitrim Heritage Officer Sarah Malone outlined her role to the members of Manorhamilton Municipal Meeting this week.

The Leitrim Heritage Forum will have 22 members including elected representatives, council staff, tourism, farming and wildlife and environment experts.
The forum will identify key themes of the Leitrim Heritage Plan and develop a mission statement. There will be public consultations before the publication and launch of the plan.

Ms Malone said she expects its will take 12-18 months before the plan will be ready. She wants to hear voices from all sectors and around the county about “what is your Leitrim Heritage?”
The forum will also have three working groups: natural; built and archaeology and culture.

Members of forum will discuss ways to educate people on our local heritage and include communities and schools. There will be a focus on tourism and conservation as well as access to sites.
If there are sites which are not currently listed as heritage, Ms Malone said they can look at getting them added to the Irish Heritage List.

The new officer was welcomed by Manorhamilton councillors and Cllrs Sean McDermott and Justin Warnock were nominated to the new forum. Councillors from Carrick-on-Shannon and Ballinamore districts will also be nominated.
