Drumshanbo Gunpowder Irish Gin has been voted Best Gin at the prestigious 2019 Flaviar Spirit Awards in New York.

Flaviar is one of the world’s most competitive drinks contests, which awards ‘Best Spirit’ gongs to only 5 of the 22,000 eligible premium spirits brands each year.

The significance of the award for the Irish Gin brand is not merely honorary – the Flaviar awards are considered early predictors of which spirits brands are set to trend globally.

Flaviar is the world’s leading online spirits enthusiasts club & the winning brands are selected from over 90,000 ratings submitted from thousands of dedicated premium spirits consumers from the USA, Europe & across the world.

This is the first time in the history of the Flaviar awards that an Irish Gin brand has won a ‘Best Spirit Award’ & claimed the Best Gin title.

Flaviar co-founder Jugoslav Petkovic says, “Once you taste Drumshanbo Gunpowder Irish Gin you can absolutely see why our members are raving about it - It’s a real explosion of flavour in a bottle.”

The reaction amongst Spirit aficionadosacross the world & in particular in the US, has been off the scale, a telling sign according to Flaviar  that this Irish gin is “one to watch”.

One Oregon fan admitted to buying the entire stock of the brand in his local liquor store:

“We fell in love with Gunpowder Gin and the Irish way of making gin and tonics {..} We found where we could buy the gin in Oregon and bought all bottles the store had! We love our Gunpowder G&T’s.”

And even non-gin drinkers are converting:

“This was the best one …and I don’t even drink gin.”

“I've never had neat gin but this one was an amazing experience”

“Easily the most flavourful and aromatic gin I've ever tasted. The bottle it comes in is also beautiful, and I plan on keeping it. Will definitely buy again.”

Demand for the brand has led to listings in all control states in the US.

It’s welcome news for Leitrim and the Drumshanbo team at The Shed Distillery of PJ Rigney, where Drumshanbo Gunpowder Irish Gin is slow-distilled by hand with oriental botanicals and gunpowder tea.

Following the incredible support for the brand at home and the exceptional international response – there are now 30 people in full-time employment at the Leitrim distillery, most of whom were previously long-term unemployed.

This Sunday The Shed Distillery heads to Prowein International Drinks Fair in Düsseldorf where as well as marking the third anniversary of the launch of Drumshanbo Gunpowder Irish Gin to the International market, distributors across the world are hoping to get an early taste of the first ever premier ‘grand cru’ whiskey from The Shed Distillery, which is due to be launched later this year.
