Multi-purpose sports facility in Carrick-on-Shannon goes to planning stage

Great news for the future development of sport in Co Leitrim and the surrounding region

The provision of top class sporting facilities in Co Leitrim moved a step closer this week with the progression to the planning stage of a regional sporting campus in Carrick-on-Shannon.

Today's paper carries a Part 8 public notice stating that Leitrim County Council, in partnership with Shannonside Regional Recreation Campus Company Ltd, proposes to carry out the construction of one full size all weather pitch, an 8 lane running track with an internal grass pitch and athletics field, indoor basketball courts, gym, changing rooms, function rooms, physiotherapy rooms, internal equipment storage, external equipment storage, hurling wall, stand and viewing area, canteen, boiler rooms, offices, site and pitch lighting, site parking and set down, along with upgrading of the existing entrance to St Mary's GAA facility, plus all associated site works at Drummagh, Attifinlay and Keenaghan townlands in Carrick-on-Shannon.

The proposed multi-million euro development will cater for a diverse range of sports including GAA, soccer, athletics, rugby and basketball.

A huge amount of work involving local sporting organisations and Leitrim County Council has been taking place behind the scenes in recent years to bring the development to this stage.

It is expected that a major fundraising drive will now take place in the region along with significant Government financial support to bring the development to fruition.

This region has been crying out for sporting facilities such as this to cater for the huge demand and ever-growing population of the area.

Submissions or observations with respect to the proposed development may be made in writing to: The Senior Executive Planner, Leitrim County Council, Planning Department, Aras an Chontae, Carrick-on- Shannon, Co Leitrim or emailed to before 4pm on Wednesday, March 30, 2022.
