Dromod man has penalty points appeal adjourned for 18 months

A Dromod man who was facing disqualification for speeding due to the accumulation of penalty points on his licence was given an opportunity at Carrick-on-Shannon Circuit Court.

Gary McGowan, 32 Shannon Cove, Dromod, Co Leitrim was appealing the severity of a district court order where he was convicted and fined €100 for speeding at 134kph in a 100kph zone at Doon, Boyle, Co Roscommon on October 17, 2020.
The conviction attracted a mandatory five penalty points.

Mr McGowan told the court he has five existing points on his licence and the new points would see him accumulate 10 points and be disqualified.

He said the points he has at the moment don't expire until April 2024.
He explained that he has new business contracts lined up and needed his licence.

Judge John Aylmer adjourned the case for 18 months.

“We'll see what the position is then,” he said.
