Our Lady's Hospital, Manorhamilton has re-opened the chapel to facilitate local wakes and removals. Last month Manorhamilton councillors called for the resumption of the public service, which were in existence before Covid but stopped during the pandemic.

Cllr Frank Dolan pointed out, there is no funeral home in Manorhamilton and said “at this time of year (the weather) makes it very difficult” for bereaved families holding wakes in houses.”

On Monday a reply from the HSE “didn't answer the question” posed to them about re-opening the morgue at Manorhamilton Municipal District Meeting. It was decided to write to the HSE again asking for clarity.

However, Cllr Sean McDermott notified the Leitrim Observer that a removal  will take place from the chapel at Our Lady's Hospital in Manorhamilton this Tuesday evening, December 13, Cllr McDermott welcomed the resumption of removals taking place there and said “it is great news for North Leitrim as Manorhamilton is a very central location and the facility was badly missed by the local community over the past couple of years.”

Removals from people's houses in rural areas were not very suitable for everyone and caused a lot of stress for families to manage traffic and crowds, he commented.

Cllr McDermott said he is delighted the facility is open once again in Manorhamilton.
