Cllr James Gilmartin brought forward a motion at January's Manorhamilton Municipal District meeting, emphasising the shortage of bins in the Kinlough area.

Litter and dog fouling bins sought for Leitrim town

Discussions took place during a meeting of Manorhamilton regarding the use and misuse of public litter and dog fouling bins.

Cllr James Gilmartin proposed a motion seeking litter and dog fouling bins be installed on Main Street in Kinlough and the community centre, specifically seeking the installation of a litter bin on Main Street.

Cllr Justin Warnock noted that a dog fouling bin was in place by the old post office, but removed during wall construction works.

A bin is currently available at the community centre, along with a sign prohibiting dogs on the premises. However, Cllr Warnock noted that people continue to bring their dogs through.

“If there was a dog fouling bin there it would still encourage people to go onto the track with their dogs,” Cllr Warnock said.

Regarding public litter bins, he mentioned that the local tidy towns group are concerned that the bin might be misused if installed.

Cllr Mary Bohan remarked that several bins in Drumkeeran had to be removed due to misuse, as the Council frequently needed to empty them

“We need to get a message to people even without dog fouling bins, it’s the dog owners responsibility,” she said.

A response from the Roads department said that the installation of litter and dog fouling bins in Kinlough will be considered for installation subject to funding and resources.
