BREAKING: Dean Clancy's European Games ends with bronze medal and place at Paris Olympics

Dean Clancy congratulates France's Sofiane Oumiha after their bout

The dream was to secure qualification for the Olympic Games in Paris next year but there was disappointment for Sean McDermott Boxing Club's Dean Clancy as his bid to turn his bronze medal into silver or gold ended at the semi-final stage of 63.5 kg contest at the European Games in Krakow on Friday.

Up against the reigning World Champion at 60kg and a 2016 Olympic silver medalist Soifane Oumiha, the Sligo fighter found the experience and technical reach of the 28 year old Frenchman too big of a hurdle to overcome as Oumiha won the contest 30-27 on all five judges' scorecards.

As he had all throughout these championships, Clancy sought to impose himself on the contest in the first round, commanding the centre of the right but the counter-punching of Oumiha proved highly effective as he won the round 10-9 on all five cards. In the second round, Clancy started brightly, aggressive and pushing the pace but a strong finish to the round from the Frenchman saw him claim the round 10-9 again.

That meant that Clancy needed a knockdown or penalties to go against the Frenchman in the final round but after the ferocious pace set by both fighters in the first two rounds, the third and final round opened more cautiously with Oumiha content to stay out of range and dodge the efforts of the Ireland champion.

Unfortunately, the round finished 10-9 again for the Frenchman although the warm exchanges and greetings after the final bell exchanged by both fighters captured the Manorhamilton clubman's delight at qualifying for the Olympics and winning his first Senior international medal.
