Weather favours Leitrim Cross-country event

Weather conditions more appropriate to mid summer track and field than late autumn cross country favoured the Leitrim AAI Under Age Cross Co9untry Championships at St Felim’s, Ballinamore, on Saturday last.

Weather conditions more appropriate to mid summer track and field than late autumn cross country favoured the Leitrim AAI Under Age Cross Co9untry Championships at St Felim’s, Ballinamore, on Saturday last.

The results will be helpful to Clubs selecting their entries for the Connacht AAI Even Ages Cross Country Championships in Ballina on Sunday November 4th and the Uneven Events in Galway the following Sunday.


Under 11: 1 Ella McDaid North Leitrim, 2 Carrie McDaid North Leitrim, 3 Ellie O’Rourke Ballinamore; Teams 1 Ballinamore 23 pts, 2 Mohill 46 pts; Under 13: 1. Eloise Clancy North Leitrim, 2 Ciara McGoldrick Ballinamore; Under 15: 1 Mary Broughton North Leitrim, 2 Eilish O’Dowd Ballinamore, 3 Chloe Rooney North Leitrim; Under 17: 1 Grainne Griffin Ballinamore.


Under 11: 1 Patrick Montgomery North Leitrim, 2 Fergal McLoughlin Ballinamore, 3 Daniel McLoughlin Ballinamore. Teams: 1 Ballinamore 19 pts, 2 North Leitrim 20 pts; Under 13: 1. Oisin McLoughlin Ballinamore, 2 Peter O’Neill Mohill, 3 Dylan Beirne Ballinamore. Teams: 1 Ballinamore 8 pts, 2 Mohill 14 pts; Under 15: 1 Jack Gilheany Ballinamore, 2 Riordan O’Rourke Ballinamore, 3 Liam Rowley Mohill. Teams: 1 Ballinamore 7pts. Under 17: 1 Ryan O’Rourke Ballinamore.


Leitrim’s two Olympians were honoured at the Connacht Schools Athletics Association Annual General Meeting in the McWilliam Hotel, Claremorris, on Thursday evening last when Laura Reynolds and Colin Griffin, both past pupils of Connacht Second Level Schools, received a presentation on behalf of the Association. The other two Connacht Olympians Olive Loughnane who lives in Cork and Paul Hession were unable to be present but Colin Griffin expressed thanks on behalf of all four after the Presentation was made following the meeting by the incoming Chairperson Tommy Cradock of Sligo Grammar School.

Tommy replaced long serving Chairperson Maura Allen of Mercy Roscommon who retired from the position this year after having served since 1987. There were no other officer changes and those positions continue to be held by P J Leddy (St Clare’s) deputy Chairperson, Mary Barrett (St Bridget’s VS, Loughrea) as secretary and Michael Roche (Moneenageisha CC) as treasurer.

The following fixtures were made: Thursday, January 24: Northern Regional Cross Country Sligo; Wednesday, February 20: AVIVA Connacht Finals Sligo; Saturday, March 9: AVIVA All Ireland Ballyclare, Co Antrim; Tuesday, April 30: Northern Region T&F Sligo IT; Thursday, May 16: AVIVA Connacht Finals Athlone; Saturday, June 1: AVIVA All Ireland Schools Tullamore.

Mohill and District AC

Well done to all our club athletes who took part in the primary schools cross country and racewalking which was held in Calry Sligo on October 13. Our race-walkers Sinead and Thomas McNabola claimed gold, Eoin Gaffey silver and Conor Mulligan bronze. Thomas, Eoin and Conor are all members of St Manachan’s racewlking team and they took silver. Jordan Reynolds, Alannah Mc Guinness, Caroline Dobson, Daragh and Aonghus McCrann were all well placed in their events. On Saturday last, our club was well represented at the county uneven cross country in St Felim’s grounds Ballinamore. These athletes will go forward to Connacht in November. Outdoor training continues at Marian College Grounds every Monday and Wednesday evening from 6-7pm and Fridays 4.30-5.30pm. 
Week commencing October 29, there will be no training due to Halloween break.

Carrick-on-Shannon AC

Training for Primary Schools athletes takes a break next week for the October Mid-Term holidays. There will be no training next Tuesday, October 30, but it will resume on Tuesday, November 6, at the usual times. Training for the Post-Primary group will continue as normal, contact John Connolly for more details.

Best of luck to Clive Glancy in next Monday’s Dublin City Marathon and anyone from the area taking part. Clive is featured on the Club Facebook page ( under the Photo of the Week section and is attracting a load of comments but everyone will wish him the best next Monday.

A reminder about the VO2 Max testing organised for the weekend of November 16/17, anyone interested nees to contact Graham Allen asap. The Senior group meets on Tuesday & Thursday at Aura at 6 pm while the Saturday morning run from Forest Park will be at 11:00.
