Leitrim swimmers impress at Connacht championships

Leitrim had young swimmers from the Sligo Swimming Club, Trident Swim Club and Carrick Fins Swimming Club competing at the Connacht Short Course Swimming Championships at Athlone Regional Sports Centre recently.

Connacht Regional Squad member Eanna O’Hara (13) was in great form, winning two gold medals in the Boys 14 and under age group over the course of the weekend. These were in 50m breaststroke (34.09) and 200m breaststroke (2:40.57) events.

Eanna also won two bronzes in the 50m freestyle (26.81) and 200m individual medley (2:26.00) and also won two medals in relays with County Sligo Swimming Club.

Twelve-year-old Carrie McDaid from Dromahair had a hugely successful championship with PBs in all seven individual events she swam in.

Competing in the Girls 14 years and under age group, Carrie had a superb win in the 50m freestyle with a fantastic time of 28.86. She also won silver in the 200m breaststroke, in a time of 3:00.89 and bronze in the 50m breaststroke in 38.44. Carrie was unlucky not to have won even more medals, as she came fourth in three other events.

Ten-year-old Odhran O’Hara very impressive in the 14 and under category, particularly in the 50m breaststroke where despite his very young age, he still came a very impressive 10th pout of 20 competitors, in a time of 41.91.

Gabriella Weaver (16) from Trident Swim Club in Carrick-on-Shannon had another superb weekend’s swimming, picking up two golds in the Girls 15 & over category. Gabriella won the 50m freestyle in a time of 27.66 and 200m freestyle (2:10.68) and silver in 50m butterfly (31.60).
