Eanna Madden joined a very exclusive group of Leitrim athletes when he helped set a new Irish record last Saturday in Geneva as part of the Irish U23 4 x 100m relay team.
The Carrick-on-Shannon Athletic Club athlete joined up with team-mates Jonathan Browning, Marcus Lawler and Stephen Gaffney to set a new Irish U23 record of 40.27 secs as they won the event.
More importantly, the time was within the 40.30 Qualifying Standard for the European U23 Championships in Tallinn, Estonia from July 9-12, and leaves the Mohill man in a prime position to represent his country at a major championships.
Eanna also ran the 200m in Geneva, recording a time of 21.48 in the 200m and 10.80 in the 100m and he may yet have a shot at the qualifying standards of 10.55 and 21.20 for the 100m and 200m before the June 28, deadline.
Selection for the relay is at the discretion of the Athletics Ireland selectors but the Mohill man is very much in the frame for selection.
