Every Area had something to cheer about last Sunday in Manorhamilton at the Leitrim Community Games Athletics Finals with all of the participating areas managing to have quite a few competitors qualify for the National Finals in Athlone.

With Kinlough and Ballinamore dominating the relays, both Areas winning three each, they will have the biggest parties heading to Athlone as Ballinamore had seven individual event winners and Kinlough five.

The relays generated the biggest excitement on the day with Kinlough’s U-12 Boys and Mohill’s U-12 Girls generating great excitement among the crowd with their victory.

Heading the list of individual qualifiers, however, was Carrick-on-Shannon Area who had 11 athletes make the cut for Athlone while Mohill Area followed next with seven qualifiers with Drumshanbo qualifying four for the National Finals.

Unfortunately, the numbers competing in the Community Games continue to decline while the absence of a Manorhamilton area has hit the county hard. In quite a number of events, there was only one competitor as Community Games struggles to attract the numbers it formerly did.

Many thanks to all those who assisted on the day and particular thanks to North Leitrim AC for hosting the event.
