There will be a small Leitrim interest in the Woodies DIY AAI Even Ages All Ireland Cross Country Championships to be held in conjunction with the National Senior and Junior Inter Counties Championships at Tattersalls, Rathoath Co Meath, on Sunday next. The first race of the programme is due off at 11.30 am.
In the Under 12 Boys event the Ballinamore team of Dylan Beirne, Senan Harte, Fionn O Brien, Fergal McLoughlin and Mark McCaffrey qualified in the Connacht Championships in Ballina a few weeks ago. Mary Broughton of North Leitrim qualified for the Connacht team in the Under 14 Girls race as did Jack Gilheany of Ballinamore in the Under 14 Boys event. The Ballinamore Under 14 team of which Jack Gilheany is a member also qualified in Ballina.
In the U-16 section Aisling McNabola of Mohill qualified for the Connacht Under 16 Girls team while David Bruen of Carrick-on-Shannon and Ryan O’Rourke of Ballinamore qualified for the Under 16 Boys team.
AAI ANNUAL AWARDS
Padraig Griffin of Ballinamore A.C. was presented with the Lifetime Achievement Award at the Annual AAI Awards Function, sponsored by Woodies DIY and Tipperary Crystal, held in the Clyde Court Hotel in Dublin last Saturday night. In addition the USA based Brian McGovern of Ballinamore A C was among those awarded Certificates as a result of breaking Irish records. Brian set new Irish Senior and Under 23 Pole vault records in the USA earlier this year. The Overall Athlete of the Year Award went to racewalker Robbie Heffernan.
