Daire to make Irish Schools team as James & Diarmuid take silver

Another fine performance over 800m at the AVIVA Tailteann Schools Interprovincial in Santry on Saturday should ensure Daire Farrell of Carrick Community School of a position on the Irish Schools Team for the Home Countries International in Cardiff on Saturday July 16.

Another fine performance over 800m at the AVIVA Tailteann Schools Interprovincial in Santry on Saturday should ensure Daire Farrell of Carrick Community School of a position on the Irish Schools Team for the Home Countries International in Cardiff on Saturday July 16.

The last Leitrim athlete to secure a position on the team was Fergal Ellis in 2007 who also ran in the 800m and finished third behind the two English runners.

The event was won by Abbey Community College Donegal runner Karl Griffin, who has qualified for the European Youths Championships happening at the same time and who came home in a new record for the event of 1.54.61. Farrell chased him all the way and finished in 1.56.10 with Presentation Carlow athlete Danny Lawlor third in 1.58.50. The Team should be announced later this week.

Elsewhere Michelle Beirne of Mohill Community College finished fourth in the 3000m Walk in a time of 16.54.22. The event was win by the Schools Champion Alicia Boylan of Monaghan.

Louise Mulvaney of St Clare’s Comprehensive School was sixth in both the 80m and 300m hurdles in times of 14.23 and 50.16 respectively.

Both Louise and Daire were members of Connacht relay teams later in the day, Louise running in both the 4 x 100m and 4 x 300m events while Daire ran a storming last leg in the 4 x 400m team which finished third on the day.
