Carrick double at Waterways Ballinamore Festival races

Clive Clancy of Carrick on Shannon AC won the Ballinamore Festival 10K roadrace sponsored by Waterways Ireland last Wednesday evening.

Clive Clancy of Carrick on Shannon AC won the Ballinamore Festival 10K roadrace sponsored by Waterways Ireland last Wednesday evening.

His time was 35 minutes 38 seconds and he was followed home by Graham Hopkins of Phibsboro AC in 37.50 and team mate Adrian Gurn in 38.30. Carrick also won the team event.

Given the severe weather forecast for the evening of the race with storms not seen since 1985 predicted for that day it was felt that the entry would be poor. In the event there was only a few hours of moderate rain earlier in the afternoon and the evening turned out to be quite pleasant in the Ballinamore area. Turnout was generally on par with the past two years but it was felt best to postpone as last year the under age races planned for St Felim’s earlier in the evening and these will now take place on a Sunday evening within the next few weeks.

Aisling Van Rensburg of North Sligo won the Womens race in 39.57 from team mate and last year’s winner Una McCool who did 41.37 and Elizabeth McCabe ,also North Sligo, in 43.27. North Sligo won the team award.

Padraig Hackett of Carrick won the 5K in 19.47 from Denis Carroll of Eagle AC of Cork who did 20.24 and Paul Little of Boyle who was third in 20.33. The Womens’ 5K was won by Anne Burke of Longford in 23.44 from Eilish O’Dowd of Ballinamore who finished in 24.25 with Lauren Hackett of Carrick third in 24.56.
