North Leitim AC’s top primary school athletes were at Moyne in Longford on Saturday for the Cross Country Championships.
It was a perfect day for running and just as well, for this was a tough course with lots of uphill and downhill and some tight turns. However it turned out to be a marvellous day for the club with two individual top three medals and one top 10 medal.
Ella McDaid from Drumlease NS claimed a bronze medal with an incredible run in the 3rd/4th class race. Ella made a fantastic start to get right out in front of the 120 runners and she was always in the top three. She was in second position when the toughest part of the course presented itself with a steep 100m climb before the finishing straight. As she approached the finish line, she ended up in a magnificent 3rd.
Our next runner, from Largy NS, was Sarah Brady who stayed in touch with the leaders right through and raced to a great 12th place, winning a medal for her superb efforts. Representing St. Clare’s, Erin Somers was next in with a really fine 17th place, followed by Emily Conlon in 32nd. Next in from the club was Erica Greene in 105th place.
In the boys 3rd/4th class race, Patrick Montgomery from St. Clare’s ran the race of his life to win a silver medal. Patrick, who only got involved in athletics at the Primary Schools Cross Country last year, has been steadily improving all year. Patrick had to really dig deep to hold on to his fantastic second place as he was being chased down hard on the last hill and right onto the finishing straight.
Running for St. Joseph’s NS, Killanummery, our next club runner was Hugo Filan in a very respectable 66th place, with Tom Hughes from St. Clare’s NS finishing in 116th.
Next into action were the girls in the 5/6th class race where we had two club members, both from St. Clare’s NS, Lara Mulvaney 90th and Jennifer Montgomery, who unfortunately didn’t finish the race after sustaining a fall. A big well done to all of our athletes. The club are very proud of your achievements.
