Halloween festivities in Derry this weekend
Derry (also known as Londonderry) has been voted the official ‘Best Halloween Destination in the world’ by USA Today and rightly so, after spending two days in their hospitality, I can tell you the historic and once divided city, is an inspiration to all.
The beautiful walled city has enjoyed thousands of visitors from across Ireland and the world this weekend for their spooktacular 30th annual Halloween festival. For at least half of those years, Derry would not have been a favourable holiday destination any time of the year. But the city and it's creative and driven population have turned all that around and should be an inspiration to every town and village in Leitrim and their festivals and events seeking more tourists.
Provide the entertainment and the crowds will come, persevere year after year and believe in what you are selling. The walled city provided treats and tricks around every corner for free. The resources, volunteer effort and creative element put into the festival is astounding, but with city reaped the benefits this weekend. The winners are the businesses people and workers in the town who have enjoyed a boost in trade during what is usually a slump period before Christmas.
Tonight Monday 31 October, both Derry and Strabane will host an evening of fun and entertainment when the City of Bones Street Carnival Parade will make its way along Derry’s Queen’s Quay f followed by a fabulous Fireworks Finale at 8pm.
The Leitrim Observer will bring you a travel feature from the Walled City over the coming weeks. We will also look at the implications of Brexit for the city on the border of Donegal, and will briefly recap the city's past, present state and what the people of Derry hope for the future.
