This week is National Stroke Week (April 16-20) , and to mark the event the Irish Heart Foundation has urged women to be extra vigilant about stroke warning signs, after new statistics revealed that almost twice as many women than men are dying from the disease in Leitrim.
According to the national charity fighting heart disease and stroke, the latest CSO figures showed that out of 26 stroke-related deaths in Leitrim, 17 women died compared to nine men during 2010. This is considerably higher than statistics showing that the national stroke death rate was around 50% higher for women. In total 1,258 women died from stroke during 2010, out of a total of 2,053 stroke fatalities country-wide.
