What are the options for increasing family farm income? Are they through on-farm efficiencies or through diversification? To help farmers make wise financial decisions, Teagasc are organising an “Options for Farm Families” course. This course will help you take a serious look at your farm situation and provide you with information on a variety of diversification ideas.
The course will be opened by Peter Young of the Irish Farmer’s Journal who has an abundance of ideas from his involvement in the JFC/Teagasc/Farmers Journal farm innovation awards.
The course will help you examine a variety of income opportunities including: how to develop your idea; assessing your farm enterprise; food enterprise possibilities; direct selling; rural tourism; organic opportunities; energy crops; forestry; completing a business plan – the basics; and, applying for grant aid.
In 2011 over 500 people participated in Options courses held throughout the country. The course will be led by Teagasc specialists and will include the experience of a local farmer or successful entrepreneur each night. The local development company (LEADER) are also involved in the course and provide an important possible funding link for participants.
Introducing the Options cours in Mohill Teagasc Advisors Shane Kilraine, Sean Doorley and Tom Coll said that ” While the priority on many farms is to improve the technical performance of the existing farm enterprises, on others there may be opportunities to add value to farm output or to diversify into other activities. The purpose of the course is to give you information on a range of alternatives. In that way you will be in a better position to assess which, if any, may have a role on your farm”.
The course commences on Thursday November 8th, 2012 at 8 pm and will run for 5 nights over 5 consecutive weeks, commencing at 8pm each night All farmers and farm family members are welcome. Admission is free but prior booking is advisable.
For booking and further information, contact Teagasc Mohill on 071-963107.
