Leitrim Community Forum at it’s monthly meeting in Carrick on Shannon last week discussed the long delays experienced by third level students, including some Leitrim students, in accessing their maintenance grants last year.

Up to the beginning of last year the processing of applications was handled by each Local Authority but that changed to a centralized system in August 2012.

The following motion was passed for transmission to the Minister for Education and Skills and to each Oireachtas member who represents Leitrim in Leinster House.

“This Community Forum calls on the Minister for Education and Skills to take all the necessary measures to ensure that eligible third level students receive their grants with minimum delay and that there be no repetition of the unacceptable level of uncertainty experienced by these students during the last academic year,” the Forum stated.
