The number of penalty points received by Leitrim drivers is expected to be down on last year’s figures.

Up to the end of November the number of penalty points issues to Leitrim drivers was 1,298. Last year the end of year figure was 1,986, so unless 700 people are issued points this month, the figure is well down.

The most popular month for local drivers receiving penalty points was August (216) while drivers were most behaved in November with just 96 points issued in Leitrim.

The figures for penalty points issued to those with Northern Ireland licences or foreign licences has also decreased this year, with 29,979 being issued so far this year. There are 48 road traffic offences that attract penalty points.

Penalty points are digitally recorded on your drivers licence. Any driver accumulating 12 penalty points within any given three-year period will be automatically disqualified from driving for 6 months.
