Shannagh Nursing Home in Belleek, Co Fermanagh is expected to close at the end of this month, with the loss of up to 40 jobs.
15 elderly residents will need to find alternative accommodation and care, following the news of closure last week.
The introduction of a “Fair Deal” scheme by the HSE in the South has prevented patients from using nursing home facilities in the North. Shannagh’s location on the border close to Cavan, Leitrim and Donegal meant it had been popular with patients from the south, but this is no longer the case.
The closure will be a huge blow to the economy of the Belleek, Blacklion and surrounding areas .
The nursing home has been family run since November 2, 1992.
At its peak, Shannagh had up to 30 patients, but this had declined to 15 patients in recent times.
Councillor John Coyle has contacted Taoiseach Enda Kenny urging a “policy change to allow elderly people in Donegal and Leitrim to avail of care services in the North.”
