Heartless vandals have broken into the Resource Centre for service users with learning disabilities on the Clarion Road, Sligo Town and set fire to three of the rooms.
Sligo Gardai are investigating the incident which occurred overnight at the Centre last Thursday, July 31. The Centre was due to close last Friday for two weeks holidays and management intend to carry out repairs during this time and re-open the Centre at the end of the planned break.
Teresa Dykes, Service Manager, Learning Disability and Autism Services, HSE Sligo and Leitrim commented, “Our priority at the moment is our service users and we will do everything we can to ensure that the damage to the Centre is repaired by the time it reopens following holidays on Monday, 18 August.
“Only a small number of service users were due to attend the Centre on Friday and we were able to use an undamaged section of the Centre to facilitate them.
“The Centre is a hub for our service users. I would like to thank the service users and their families and our staff for their understanding and support at this time. We have 32 service users who attend the Day Centre and I look forward to welcoming them back after their holidays”.
