Figures from the Oireachtas show that the 6 TDs for Roscommon-South Leitrim and Sligo-North Leitrim have earned a whopping €3 million in salaries and expenses since they were elected in March 2011 until July 2014.
The figures show that the country’s 166 TDs have been paid €78 million, an average of around €470,000 each over the 41-month period for their work. This equates to around €138,000 per year in salary, allowances and expenses. The expenses figure works out at an average of €34,945 per TD per year.
Another €19.82 million has been paid out to 60 senators, with each of them receiving on average €330,000 between March 2011 and July 2014.
The figures covering all payments in that period show that in a little over three years, our six TDs have earned a staggering total of €2,963,279.90. This equates to an average of €493,879.98 to our six TDs.
RTE’s Investigations Unit have collated the figures and show the extent of the payments made to TDs in just 41 months in the job.
In Roscommon-South Leitrim, Frank Feighan (Fine Gael) is the highest earner with payments totalling €547,409.81.
Denis Naughten (Independent) comes next with €515,894.80 and then Luke ‘Ming’ Flanagan (Independent) with €474,776.60. Flanagan has since moved on to Brussels as an MEP but still claimed €21,125 in expenses for the first five months of 2014.
In Sligo-North Leitrim, Tony McLoughlin (Fine Gael) was paid a handsome €526,657.91 including expenses of €50,540.23 in 2014 and €51,035.00 in 2013.
Michael Colreavy (Sinn Fein) received €521,848.24 and John Perry (Fine Gael) got €376,692.58.
In the same time period, Senators have received an average of €97,000 per year.
Senator Paschal Mooney (Fianna Fail) received payments totalling €349,503.44 while Senator Michael Comiskey (Fine Gael) was paid €333,552.28.
Other payments include: Imelda Henry (FG) €333,883.68; Susan O’Keeffe (LAB) €353,837.79; Marc MacSharry (FF) €145,964; John Kelly (LAB) €343,308.04; Terry Leyden (FF) €355,838.19; and Kathryn Reilly (SF) €324,021.27.
