Co Leitrim Chief Fire Officer, Finian Joyce, has appealed to land owners to desist from lighting fires or burning off any dry vegetation especially over the coming days..
Speaking to the Leitrim Observer this week, Mr Joyce reminded the public that burning off any vegetation was illegal between March 31 and August 1 and he asked that everyone remain vigilant and report any fires immediately.
“This is the peak season for bog and gorse fires and there is a heightened risk of fires over the next few days, with the dry conditions and high temperatures” he explained.
“In Co Leitrim we have so far escaped the fires seen in our neighbouring counties this year but I would appeal to everyone to desist from burning any vegetation. We don’t want a repeat of past years when there was substantial damage to property including the loss of homes.”
He noted the majority of arsonists light such fires in or around dusk and he asked the public to immediately contact fire services if they noted any blazes in their locality.
