Scollan’s Gala Superstore in Drumshanbo is celebrating 10 successful years in business with a Family Fun Customer Appreciation Day this Friday, September 11.
The family run business wishes to thank all their loyal customers for their support over the past decade. The Family Fun Day this Friday will have special offers, spot prizes, a BBQ, refreshments and a Children’s entertainer from 2.30-5.30pm. Shannonside will broadcast live from the supermarket and all locals are invited to join in the festivities.
Ollie Scollan opened up his butcher shop over 40 years ago in Drumshanbo. Almost 20 years ago his son Karol joined him and they have since opened up a supermarket and more recently a restaurant with his other son Oliver.
Their knowledge of produce and experience in the trade as well a local popularity have been the ingredients to their success.
The Gala supermarket had been owned by Campbells and DH Burkes before the Scollans renovated and opened up the modern all convenient store ten years ago.
The family opened the restaurant four years ago, which is also doing a great trade, giving a comprehensive service to the wider Drumshanbo community.
The Scollans are butchers and farmers first, and this is obvious in their in store’s butcher counter which is full with a variety of choice cuts.
Karol Scollan told the Leitrim Observer, “Our customers like to know that the meat is from our own farm.” This deep knowledge of the meat allows the butchers to display and sell the very best cuts and to provide recipe ideas and cooking tips to customers.
The butchers stock a large variety of meat, poultry and pork. The store also has an impressive fish counter, with fresh fish delivered daily to the store.
The deli/bakery counter has a beautiful display of fresh salads and home cooked lunches, dinners and snacks.
Karol explained they have an in-store chef so all meals are prepared and cooked daily, nothing is bought in ready made. Lasagne, quiche and daily special dinners are prepared each morning.
The store is a popular choice for take-away dinners, everyone from elderly people, busy mums and young singles enjoy the fresh and healthy meals which cost just €4-€6.
Customers also have the option of ordering their food in the comfort of the on-site restaurant. The store also create decadent desserts daily as well as freshly baked produce.
Karol said they are proud to be part of the Gala Store as they are “truly local” suppliers. He said the Gala branded produce also give customers “great value for money.”
The shop has changed along with customer demand and the store is easy to navigate with prices and offers on easy to see displays.
Karol also commented that when the store opened ten years ago breakfast rolls were the most popular items they sold, but now there is a turn towards more healthy meals such as salads and wraps.
Karol Scollan said they really want to thank their customers; it is obvious he knows the majority of the shoppers by name.
He said they strive to deliver a personal service, helping customers with their shopping whether it is carrying it out to the car or delivering it locally.
Scollan’s Gala has also had its fair share of luck with lottery and scratch cards over the past decade and this has helped increase its popularity among locals.
The supermarket boasts an impressive off-licence area with a vast array of beers, crafts beers, spirits and wines, all at competitive prices. There is a fishing tackle and bait store above the store also and Karol is a licensed firearms dealer.
The store has over 30 staff, full and part time, and they are all local and well-known in the area.
The Family Fun Customer Appreciation Day is open to everyone, call in for a chat and to enjoy the ten year festivities this Friday from 2.30-5.30pm!
