In a statement issued this afternoon, Leitrim County Council have warned roads throughout the country are "in a treacherous condition."

The update which was released on the Leitrim County Council website also notes that water levels are now at "critical level."

Roads throughout County Leitrim are in a treacherous condition after fresh falls of snow and severe frost in the last 24 hours. National Primary and Priority Regional roads are passable but with great care. Untreated roads are in a treacherous condition and only essential travel is recommended. County Council crews have been working on the National Primary and Priority Regional Roads since early this morning. Other roads are being dealt with on a needs basis. People are advised not to drive unless absolutely necessary. The position is being monitored on an ongoing basis. Fresh salt supplies are being delivered today. The NRA is working closely with local authorities to ensure that Salt supplies are adequate but must be carefully managed to ensure we can continue to deal with priority routes however long the cold weather continues.

Leitrim County Council will continue to endeavour to deal with individual hardship cases. Any requests for assistance should be addressed to the Council's headquarters at Aras an Chontae in Carrick on Shannon at 071 9620005 or to the Council's District Engineers Offices at the telephone contact details as outlined on the Council's website during office hours.

In the event of urgent assistance being required outside of office hours, members of the public can contact Leitrim County Council's hotline number - 1890 302 302. If you get through to voicemail please leave a message with your name and contact phone number - all calls and messages will receive attention as soon as possible. We would ask customers to be patient.

The Council is in regular liaison with the HSE, Garda Siochna and other agencies to ensure that access is maintained for provision of services to the more vulnerable sectors of our community

The public is advised to be aware of the needs of the vulnerable and to bring any concerns to our attention. It is advised that only essential journeys should be undertaken during the current weather conditions and motorists should ensure that their vehicles are in such condition as to undertake all journeys safely.

Water Conservation

Water supplies are critical at this stage especially in North Leitrim. Some sections of the North Leitrim Regional Water Supply Scheme will be turned off tonight. Leitrim County Council appeals to all water consumers in the County to conserve supplies and check for possible leaks. Reservoir levels are low and the County Council may have to commence restricting supplies in other areas later on in the week. We are also asking that Group Water Scheme Trustees would actively check their schemes for problems such as leaks, wastage etc., Leitrim County Council would like to thank you for your co-operation and regret any inconvenience caused. Any enquires in this regard, please contact the above telephone numbers.
