Leitrim VEC have been informed that there are no funds available from the Department of Education to create a playing field at Mohill Community College.
Cllr Enda Stenson had previously queried about available funding to develop a field at Mohill Community College into a functioning playing field. Acting CEO Martin Fallon said he was in contact with the Building Unit of the Department of Education and was told that all funding is now prioritised towards buildings only and there is no funding available for the development of playing fields.
Cllr Stenson said he was disappointed. He stated that the funding had been allocated at the start along with money for the new school, but it was “the Department’s fault it didn’t go ahead.”
Cllr Stenson said the Department spent around €250,000 to purchase the field and now won’t spend an extra €100k to turn it into a football field.
He asked for a delegation to meet with Department officials to discuss the situation. The VEC agreed to ask for this meeting.
