UPDATED: Two young women struck by train near Leitrim border

Update June 14, 6.17pm: One female aged in her 40s has been fatally injured and her body remains at the scene.

A second female, aged in her 20s, has been removed from the scene to Sligo University Hospital with serious injuries.

The Coroner has been notified. Forensic Collision Investigators are en route to the scene.

Two young women have been struck by a train heading from Sligo to Connolly Station in an incident which has been described as "serious".

That's according to Irish Rail, who confirmed the women were hit at a location near Ballysadere in Co Sligo this afternoon (Wednesday June 14).

Gardaí and emergency services are currently attending the scene of the incident.

Passengers on the train were reportedly provided with water and escorted to a nearby bus stop for transfers, which are being co-ordinated by Irish Rail.

In a tweet published earlier today, Irish Rail stated: "Passengers expecting to travel on the 15:05 Sligo to Connolly service will experience a significant delay. Ambulance service is required to deal with a serious incident near Sligo. Update to follow."
