€385,000 awarded in medical negligence action

THE family of the late Art Ridge, a secondary school teacher from Mohill who died after his heart was accidentally pierced during a post-operative procedure in a private Dublin hospital, have been awarded a €385,000 settlement.

THE family of the late Art Ridge, a secondary school teacher from Mohill who died after his heart was accidentally pierced during a post-operative procedure in a private Dublin hospital, have been awarded a €385,000 settlement.

The family brought a medical negligence action against surgeon, Michael J Tolan, and surgical registrar, Ramy Alnahhal, following the death of 62-year-old Mr Ridge on December 18, 2005. Last week the court heard that liability had been admitted fully by Dr Alnahhal and the settlement was made against him. There was no admission of liability on behalf of either Dr Tolan or the Blackrock Clinic and the action against both of those defendants was struck out.
