A convicted Garda killer who escaped from custody Co Cavan last week has been jailed for four months at Derry Magistrates Court.
Martin McDermott (26) of no fixed abode, pleaded guilty to disorderly behaviour, three assaults on police, damaging a set of handcuffs and resisting police on March 16.
The charges relate to an incident in the Galliagh area of the city.
A cross border manhunt was launched last Thursday evening when McDermott failed to return to the open prison in County Cavan where he’s serving his sentence for manslaughter.
It’s believed McDermott made his way to his girlfriend’s home in Galliagh where he was apprehended by police at around 11am on Friday.
During the arrest he assaulted three police officers and caused criminal damage to a pair of handcuffs. It’s understood the 26-year-old bodybuilder had been able to twist the metal on a pair of handcuffs being used to restrain him.
Derry Magistrates Court heard he also told police to ‘f**k off’.
During interview McDermott apologised for his behaviour. He said he ran away from police because of a bad experience as a child and because of post traumatic stress disorder from a recent car crash.
Defence Solicitor Keith Kyle said he would be returned to custody in the Republic in due course.
He asked the court to take into account the early plea and apology.
Passing sentence, district judge Barney McElholm said McDermott had a serious record for this type of offence in the Republic and jailed him for four months.
Gardai are awaiting the end of this sentence to begin their move to repatriate McDermott to serve the remainder of a seven year custodial sentence for the killing of Fenagh native, Gda Gary McLoughlin in 2009.
