Sean Quinn was granted compassionate leave to spend Christmas with his family.
The 66 year old former millionaire had asked the authorities for permission to attend his granddaughter’s christening and then spend a few days at home but instead he was granted permission to leave Mountjoy Jail on Christmas Eve returning on St Stephen’s Day. Sean Quinn was not freed to attend the christening of his granddaughter Orna in Staghall, Belturbet, Co Cavan on Saturday, December 22.
Quinn is currently serving a nine week sentence for contempt of court. In a statement the prison service confirmed that compassionate temporary release had been granted for Quinn, whose sentence will end in January.
The decision was made following discussions between the Republic’s Attorney General, the Irish Prison Service and Justice Minister Alan Shatter.
