Research ongoing for EPA
solution

Leitrim County Council is still awaiting the completion of research into alternative waste disposal systems.

Leitrim County Council is still awaiting the completion of research into alternative waste disposal systems.

The search has been ongoing for a solution to planning restrictions now in place as a result of an EPA directive on waste water treatment systems for single houses.

At present much of the land in Co Leitrim does not meet minimum soakage requirements to qualify for planning permission and this has caused substantial difficulties those seeking to build.

Cathaoirleach, Cllr Sean McDermott asked the Council to find out what progress has been made towards finding a solution.

“The Code of Practice regarding Waste Water Treatment and Disposal Systems for Single Houses commenced on the 8th January 2010, making it extremely difficult and very expensive to get planning in rural Leitrim. Has an alternative solution been found to accommodate the soil type in County Leitrim?” he asked.

He was told that the research is scheduled to run until April 2014 after which next steps will be determined.

“Currently there is no change in the situation that arose from the revised Code of Practice issued in 2010,” acknowledged a Council spokesperson.
