Seven dogs were put down in Leitrim last year, according to figures from the Department of Environment, Community and Local Government.
The figures nationally showed that up 10 dogs are being put down daily.
The latest figures show 15,481 dogs entered Irish pounds last year. The number of greyhounds destroyed remains high at 427 in 2013 compared to 404 in 2012.
The majority of dogs put down are healthy animals surrendered by owners who can not or in some cases will not care for their pet any more. Families are advised to consider carefully before purchasing a new puppy, it is essential that owners consider the size the pup will grow to as an adult dog.
