The battle for the local radio licence for Sligo/ North Leitrim and Leitrim/ South Donegal began this week.
The oral presentations before the Broadcast Authority’s (BAI) were held in the Clarion Hotel, Sligo on Monday, April 28. The BAI received two applications for the licence, one from the current licence holders Ocean FM and the other from NW Coast FM Limited, trading as Coast FM which is owned by Midwest Radio (Mayo) who were the previous holders.
CoastFM’s presentation focused on polls undertaken which they claim indicate a significant drop in listenership since they held the franchise, they say they will introduce a summer programme exclusively in Irish, a bursary awards scheme for students and the businesses and a return to a number of shared programmes with Midwest Radio.
OceanFM focused on the diversity of its programming within the region and highlighted their record in engaging with and addressing local issues, they noted their 5 PPI Gold Awards in 2013 and the Prix Europa Award for radio drama in 2013.
It is expected a recommendation will issue to the Authority in the coming months.
