Leitrim County Council reminds all householders in that Waste in the County will be collected by permitted waste collectors and charged using a Pay by Weight System from the 1st December, 2014. Household waste collectors operating in County Leitrim will be required to provide a Black bin (Waste), Blue bin (Recyclables) and Brown Bin (Food Waste) pay by weight service to their customers.
What is Pay by Weight?
Pay by weight is a system whereby householders pay per kilogram for the amount of waste they produce, the less they produce the less they pay.
Householder’s need to ensure that they are registered and have an account number with a permitted waste collector. If householders do not have an account number they should ring their waste collector as soon as possible to get one. The byelaws require that householders shall cooperate with their relevant waste collector in order to ensure that all of their bins (Black/blue and brown) are chipped and scanned.
The Pay by weight system will allow for greater recycling and diversion of waste from landfill and will result in savings to householders. Leitrim County Council recommends that householders sign up to the system as soon as possible to save money and avoid the rush around the December 1st deadline.
Householders should also be aware that tagged bins will no longer be collected from the 1st December 2014. Householders should contact their waste collector in order to obtain refunds for any tags on hand.
