In welcoming the publication of the National Carers’ Strategy, Sligo/North Leitrim TD, John Perry, said that it finally gives carers the recognition they deserve.
Mr Perry said that the publication of this Strategy is an important start in recognising the role carers play and is long overdue. He said: “Family carers are the backbone of care provision in this country and we must ensure that they have consistent support and that they are included in the decision-making process around the care of their loved ones. By involving carers in the planning and decision making process in care provision sends a very clear message that their contribution to the care of a loved one is recognised, respected and valued.”
The Minister of State for Small Business concluded: “It is a key objective of Government Primary Care policy that older people and children and adults living with an illness or a disability can keep their dignity and their independence in their own homes and communities for as long as possible and carers play an important role in this process. This Strategy is a positive, important step in ensuring that carers receive the recognition, support and empowerment that they have always deserved.”
