Martin Ford, whose mother is from Drumkeerin is leading a campaign in Sligo to keep their town mayor.
Mr Ford is handing in a petition of over 1,000 signatures to the Government requesting that Sligo people be allowed to directly elect their own mayor after the abolition of Sligo Borough council.
At the end of June next year Sligo’s urban council, like many all over the country will be dissolved and at the moment a mayor can only be elected through this council.
Mr Ford told the Leitrim Observer that they are looking for support from across the North West to allow the people of Sligo to directly elect a person who is not already a councillor to the historic role.
