The village of Newtowngore is celebrating a major achievement this month with the successful completion of improvement works including the provision of public lighting, a footpath and landscaping.
The project was first started in 2000 but was shelved due to a lack of funding. It was restarted in 2008 and in 2011 the Newtowngore Town Development Association became a driving force behind the works.
The preliminary works and applications took many months before approval was gained for the provision of:
• A kerbed and tarmacadam footpath (600m) from the school to the village.
• Public lighting, 16 standard posts, along the Carrigallen Road (LP1529).
• Landscaping along the route of the footpath.
The project aimed to substantially improve the general appearance and environmental attractiveness of Newtowngore village. It was felt that this, in turn, would also be beneficial to the population living outside the boundaries of the Village.
Leitrim Development Company advanced a 75% Grant Aid and Leitrim County Council allowed a further percentage with the difference met by the Newtowngore Town Development Association.
Work commenced in January this year and the lights were finally switched on, on Friday, November 8.
The resulting change on the Carrigallen road is amazing and a the Development Association would like to pay a special tribute to all involved.
