Leitrim County Council met with Waterways Ireland yesterday, September 2 and discussed the impending closure of the Locaboat facility at the Ballinamore Marina.
Cllr Martin Kenny raised the issue of the closure expected to happen in early October at this week’s Council meeting.
There had been previous fears about this business a number years previous, but it seems a downturn in tourist numbers for the canal will result in their relocation to Athlone this year. There is understood to be 12 Locaboat cruisers in the Ballinamore marina.
Sinn Féin area councillors Martin Kenny and Brendan Barry have both claimed this is a “serious blow to the town” in terms of revenue and tourism. Three people are employed directly by Locaboat, but the closure will affect a local cleaning contractor which employs a number of staff, dry cleaners and of course shops and businesses in the town.
Ballinamore Development Company have been informed of the Locaboat’s closure, but the company has not confirmed its decision to the paper.
County Manager Frank Curran said they would meet with Waterways Ireland and Ballinamore Development Company to discuss the possibility of attracting other cruise hire companies to the area.
