Leitrim County Council will be curtailing the practice of putting supplies of grit at strategic locations for distribution by local residents following the ongoing theft of supplies.
Previously the Council had put supplies of grit on dangerous hills and other strategic locations during the bad weather, but a spokesperson for the Council acknowledged that this practice would now be restricted to periods of severe weather because bins were being emptied as soon as deliveries were made.
These ongoing thefts meant that there were no supplies available for use by the local community during bad weather.
“As soon as the bins are filled they are being emptied. We are not sure who is taking the grit,” the Council spokesperson told Monday’s Council meeting during a discussion on the Winter Maintenance Plan.
“Supplies of grit will be put in place at these locations during severe weather events,” he assured local councillors ,but he stressed that the Council could not finance constantly topping up bins if people were then going to come in and empty them.
